Hi Stefanie - while I defer to Paul's praise of the Sigma, my instinctive
advice is to avoid off-brand lenses completely, having invariably made a
mistake when tempted to save a few quid by going this route. The only one I
remember with anything like respect is a Tamron 70-150 I used on Canons
over 25 years ago... Even if the optics are OK you tend to get inferior
build quality and mickey-mouse mechanicals. My own GP lens on the S2 is the
Nikkor 28-70/2.8 which performs excellently, just as it does on an F5, and
this stays on most of the time; the fixed 24, 105 Micro and 180 are all
fine too, and I hear good reports of the 17-35 on S2, and the 12-24 DX if
you really need WA capability. Rather to my surprise, a test with a
borrowed Nikkor 24-85 AF-S G showed that to perform really well if stopped
down a bit - very modestly priced lens, good focal length range. HTH
