I'm here in lurk mode...I haven't used my S2 in mixed lighting setups so far
so can't add anything to the discussion. Well, I could talk about motion
picture stocks and video capture but it would be straying off topic.

I've always hated that sudden burn out with much of video and much prefer,
like everyone else I suppose, the gradations captured by film. However, it
is possible to avoid video burn but you really need an engineer constantly
tweaking the camera's sensitivity and setting your exposures with an
oscilloscope and not a light meter. And I know videographers who have done
that and produced brilliant results but they were confined to studio
shooting. Similarly, I suspect you may be able to tweak a 1Ds or a 14n
(CMOS) to give you smoother gradations in your shadows and highlights
(probably at the expense of he midtones) but not sure about the S2 or D100
(CCD). Maybe you can...
