If there is no change to the capture settings (manual exposure, fixed
colour balance setting, consistant light source), how could the density
change? I too have noticed this. My camera checked out OK at service. 

I can tell you that the problem is not cable or card related, but a
random software bug.

Unfortunately, there is no setting that you can change from "vary
exposures at random" to "please make my life easier"

A similar issue is:
The S2 will also make warmer images (on manual exp, daylight balance)
when a flash is connected via SCA adaptor than when connected via synch
lead. (note: shooting distant scene, not even my Metz will carry to the
horizon!)

Frustrating to realise that we have to accept that because it is a
"computer", it will perform inconsistantly, but I believe your workflow
will have to accommodate this.
