I have archived many original D1-NEF files using iView and have just checked the read time on my machine (Mac G4-DT/1.25GH-768MB RAM/OS10.3.3). It takes 4 seconds to read and display the NEF files from a CD, I haven't tried but it should take a shorter time from my hard disk. JPG or S2-Raw files read instantly! I know when I installed iView they recommend you have the latest version of Nikon View also installed. Hope this may be of some help.
