AF-S lenses contain an integral motor to do the focussing and are
therefore faster to focus. AF-D lenses feed the focus distance back to the
camera where it's used for some flash and metering functions and are
focused by the camera's "screwdriver". All AF-S lenses are also AF-D.
AF-S _may_ be bette quality, but they are definitely wider maximum
apertures. Neither were designed specifically for small sensors.

The Nikon DX lenses _were_ designed for small sensors and will vignette on
a 35mm (or full-frame digital), particularly at the wide zoom settings.
