Digital puts one on a short learning curve for technically difficult shots.
Hi Dick,
I feel that this needs qualifying. If one rates exposure , focus , perspective etc as technically difficult , then the above counts .
When it comes to shots that are truly technically demanding (over and above the more mundane aspects of photography), then the challenges can be as great they have always been , it's just that you get more instant gratification with digital.......unless of course the 'lets fix it on the system' syndrome kicks in.
Despite the wonders of Photoshop CS , I still believe that you are best served by getting the best possible result from the initial photography.
BTW , there was an interesting comment a short while ago about how 30k of equipment still seemed to produce boring images compared to some of the photographs being produced on DSLRS . Without wishing to draw too much flak , I think that this observation must also be qualified . I'm having great fun producing 'creative' imagery on the D1s , and it lends itself to lifestyle etc. For the really technical stuff , I'll still use the Sinar 54 and 23.
The shots that result from these jobs can often appear seamless and predictable. But the underlying technical problem has been to achieve just that effect with subjects that refuse to behave as one would either wish or predict.
For instance , some of the drinks briefs we get demand certain liquids to do everything that you would expect them to do , but in reality the actual product reacts in a totally different way. Our job is to deliver this expectation rather than reality, and on a consistent basis .That's one of the many areas where you can really find a challenge. I've done some things with piping , sticky backed plastic , compressed air and treacle that are best left unmentioned even on a list as liberal as this one :-) .

Bob Marchant.
