Many thanks for the feedback on noise. Having done the experiments in
the forest, I decided that the best way to cut out external factors was
the lens cap or even the body cap - the result is much the same. I am
interested in Giles' idea about the distribution and colour channels, a
thought for the weekend.

Don, you are right, I am turning up the gain, but only because I know
the noise is there and I have been trying to quantify it (I was
staggered at the difference between different cameras under identical
test conditions).
