It would seem to be a weird phenomenon, ... but for any of us to get a handle on it we should know what version of PS you are using, as well as the working color space, and where the printer spaces are from. That is, I might imagine such wierd effects being the result of working with, and doing serious tonal adjustments in a "device" color space rather than a tried&true PS working color space.
