Hi John,

Welcome to the list.

My only quest is to establish a consistent and precise connection between data and density. I am not even interested in issues concerning colour representation. The small piece of the digital world that I have sliced off for myself and attempted to conquer is simply about controlling dynamic range conversions, reproduction curves and luminosity, ie. the zone system.

Leaving aside the issues concerning no interest in colour representation ( an approach which pretty much borders on heresy in some quarters :-) ), the issues of dynamic range will leave plenty of room for debate ( Fortunately , you've missed the whole lengthy and somewhat heated discussion on the ( lack of ) relationship between bit depth and dynamic range, but I'm sure it must be in the archive) .

I have many questions and problems I need help with and I am looking for people who, like myself, are trudging day to day through the same perplexing, often enigmatic, In the Looking Glass world of binary encoded, algorithmically processed imagery.

Fire away with the questions . If you read the BJP you may have already seen some opinions on digital capture and dynamic range that have been at best based on some subjective conceptions of as to what constitutes a RAW file , and I think that this may be the basis for some confusion in this area.

As to luminosity and the zone system etc , can't wait for William Curwens take on this , as he has a firm grasp of the expectation versus the reality , but somehow manages to defy the limitations imposed on us mere mortals!

I like the title of this forum Image makers. It gives the impression that the emphasis here is on the image, and that all the conversations, debates and technical inquiries serve a greater purpose.

Yep , at the end of the day it's the image that matters , but if we can make the numbers work for us , albeit only ones and zeros , then it would be rude not to take advantage.

Regards,

Bob Marchant.
