Dear Nick,
Can you tell me more about the ibook problem.
I bought an early Ibook as did a friend of mine.
Both of our machines developed problems outside of the guarantee.
I've still got mine, he threw his away and bought a new one, but with a 3
year Apple warranty.
After 18 months his second machine developed exactly the same problem, which
was repaired under warranty.
This has put me off Macs for life and after years of Mac usage I'm now
making the painful transition to PC's.
If this fault is well recognised then perhaps they will fix mine?
Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark.

Subject: [PRODIG] i-book motherboard failure

Hi list,

Has anyone here sucessfully appealed an
out-of-warranty repair of an Apple i-book that
has the video-failure/ lock-up/ motherboard
problem? I've just put my i-book in to Apple and
now have a 400 bill for a fault that has
developed 'inside' the machine during regular
use, therefore outside my insurance company's
remit for a claim.

Apparently it's a common (and controversial)
fault that happens just outside the one-year's
warranty period to many i-books. Apple extended
the guarantee to include models and specified
certain serial numbers ...but not mine! There's
been a law-suit running in the US filed by
disgruntled users outside the guarantee, but I
don't know if there's a similar one here. The
Apple blurb is at
http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/

Thanks in advance
Nick
