Hi For what it's worth, I recently got an Imacon 343 s/h for 3500, after having used a friend's Nikon Coolscan 4000ED for about a year. It's optical resolution is claimed at 3200ppi. The Imacon seems way ahead on quality to me, after being able to make a direct comparison on the same slide, particularly with regard to noise in shadow areas. The software also seems much better. With a bit of cunning, one of the holders also allows you to scan 5x4's in two halves :-) The older higher spec Imacons can often be obtained s/h for a good price, if you're prepared to put up with slow scans.
