We saw the small dot of Venus travel part way across the sun, from the
bottom up, before sunset. I thought that the image was upright, but the pics
in the newspaper showed Venus moving from the top down.

You can't believe what you see in the papers! I used my old eclipse glasses from '99 & saw the van of love travel from 6 o'clock to 5 o'clock. You were right.

The inversion when you move the paper away is just normal optics at work.

And, just to stay on topic, did anyone get a digital shot? How was the
chromatic aberration?

Well I photographed the image on the paper with a Nikon 4300 which is digital!
I did make a hole in a piece of card the size of the telescope lens and this produced a nice shot of the sun against a dark background with Venus traveling across it (from 7o,clock to 4 o'clock). This was shot with an ND4 filter over the telescope lens.
