Also on starting up PS a dialogue box helpfully advises me to turn off smoothing for fonts under 8 points. It says it is found in PS preferences>general. I must admit I can't find this under the general options.
I think you'll find that the setting you seek is in Appearance in System Preferences. Also this error which has occurred for me on more than one occasion seemingly arrived with the System 10.3.4 upgrade, and the offending size seems to return to 4pt after a while. I will keep watching to see any pattern behind the recurrence.
I shall ask Adobe whether they can shed any light on this one.
Adobe says, "It's an OS issue."
I've seen this happen a few times today (after restoring a clean 10.3.4 image multiple times on my system), and the only way I can reproduce it is to log in as another user into OS X.
If someone can find another way to get these settings to change without logging in as another user, please let me know, and I'll be happy to pass the information on to Apple.
