As promised, I did contact Adobe, and as I suspected it is an Apple issue - the "Appearance preferences do seem to get forgotten or reset". I certainly knew that I had made no change, yet they would become 4pt for some reason - irritating, but not life threatening. If any of us can spot the trigger for the change, then we can pass it on to Apple and others, and hopefully it'll get sorted.
Perhaps someone at Apple is watching this List.
