WinXP is like a colander when security is concerned, so that is something to
keep in mind is you are going to have the computer connected to the net. If
you are, I would suggest a good firewall, an even better anti-virus and for
you to keep up with all the security patches and updates from the Microsoft
Update website. Also, install some spyware detector/eliminator and try not
to install any crap programs that will compromise the computer even more
than XP does.

Apart from that, I'd go fro XP as it is easier these days to get support for
it and it is likely that the support and the system itself will get better
in the future (which is to be expected since it is really s***t anyway).

The other thing (although I assume you know this) is: Don't use XP Home
edition. Go for XP Pro.

 Is there an advantage  in using Windows XP over Windows 2000? The stability
of Windows 2000 seems to be better than XP, though the reports I've heard
are anecdotal.
