Hi all I am moved to posting, but fear it will be like 'water off a ducks back'. I find this list, quite an amazing, eclectic and disparate group of people who are well informed and in particular, well mannered and generous in their offerings to all. It therefore comes as a surprise and an irritation when someone clearly abuses the list and those unwritten but accepted rules, by posting comments which are generalised in the extreme, objectionable and by extension, denigrate others on this list. Sadly, a host of educational qualifications does not ensure good manners. Manners come partly from up bringing, but also from a development through life of an understanding, appreciation and empathy of what others have to offer in the University of Life.
With this list, being of a technical nature, it is important that any assertions should be backed up with some technical knowledge or experience. If you cannot do this, then one should refrain from posting, until you have sufficient knowledge to do so. Politely asking questions on this list is just as important as delivering the answers or comments. Not many people who practise in the world of image making, have made a fortune out of it, other than some suppliers. When suppliers let us down, it can be useful to criticise, in order to persuade them to improve their services or products. However, to criticise their products in a general manner and in such an emotive way as to imply that colleagues are foolishly at fault for going down that route, is clearly not acceptable. Most manufacturers soon get found out if they have produced a dud product. As such, they mostly try to get it right, before it comes to market. Judging from previous posts on this lists, I think most of us agonise over what digital equipment to buy. We usually end up making a choice based on the following criteria. 1) What we think will suit our needs best; and 2) what we feel we can afford at the time. The first criteria is often governed by the market we are in, as much as the various options that are available to us. It is therefore unhelpful to say that one product is completely inferior to all others, when clearly it has a very significant market share already. Even more unhelpful, is to suggest that its purchasers are less knowledgeable or skilled in the areas of its use and applications, when you know you are communicating with members of such a list whose very livelihood depends upon being highly skilled in that area.
