Hi Dick and Calvers and all

A lot of my work is in photographing large interiors such as cathedrals,
abbeys and power stations etc. How you tackle it, really depends on where
you think your skills lie. I have been doing this type of work for 30 odd
years, so to set up 40,000 joules of flash lighting (20 - 30 units) in a
cathedral is no big deal. It gives the flexibility of choosing which light
source you want as the dominant factor. i.e. Daylight coming in through the
windows, or allowing a mix of flash and tungsten to balance the light coming
in through the windows, so that the stained glass is recorded faithfully. I
say a mix, as I always go for mood effects in this type of photography. Warm
tungsten lighting often give a mellow feeling to the stonework etc. Timing
of when to press the shutter during the day, is as critical with large
interiors as with exteriors.

Using this technique, whether you use film or digital capture is irrelevant.
Balancing the different light sources is the critical factor. What is often
noticeable is that digital capture is often more sensitive to flash lighting
than film, so you often require less power. The ratios are significantly
different.

How you spend your time in getting the final result is a matter of choice.
For me, I get more satisfaction out of setting up the lighting over say,
four hours than spending the equivalent time in blending images together in
Photoshop. For smaller interiors, sadly the current vogue in house and
property magazines, is to go for no balancing at all, hence one sees so many
burnt out highlights and black shadows. But then, when you consider what
magazines pay for photography, it is not surprising that people look for the
short cuts to get the job done. I do not go down that route. But that is
another story.

Plug. I run seminars in this type of thing. Lighting of interiors, that is!
