Thanks Pam, tried this but didn't work. So I remembered my Mac OSX "the Missing Manual" in which I looked up 'Trash', this worked: hold the mouse over the trash and select empty (empty appears just above the Trash icon), worked a treat! Funny how I had never noticed this before.
