To correct my previous post - when using an edge mask on an USM layer it is often good to make a shadow point edit to lighten the shadows so that the entire image has some minor sharpening while the edges have the major sharpening applied (with or without the addition of luminance blends/fades and or blend if sliders or lighten/darken layer split USM halo intensity).
