FTP, file transfer protocol, can be used for just such a purpose.
If you upload files to your webspace, and give users permission to grab files from there - then you are giving them the username and password to your whole website. Which is not a great idea!
A better method might be to upload the files to your webspace and create a simple webpage listing the files they can grab. For different clients you can have different webpages.
Or alternatively, Rod Wynne-Powell has set up his machine to be an FTP server offering usernames and passwords - this allows clients to grab files under password protection.
