Hi Bob,
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a point to point transfer between your machine and a FTP server. Almost every web server will have FTP enabled as HTML files are generally uploaded to the server via this method. Although FTP is generally a lot better than e-mail for transferring large files (for the reasons you mentioned) it is not without it's pitfalls. Since you will need an FTP client application to access the storage space as well as usernames and passwords FTP transfer tends to be a bit more involved than email (especially for non computer savvy clients).
For low volume transfers I would recommend You Send It (http://www.yousendit.com). Simply upload the file via your web browser and specify the recipient's email address and the rest is done for you. Behind the scenes the file is held on their server for a limited time where the recipient of an email notification can simply click on the link and download the file.
I've been using this for a while now without any sign of increased spam or privacy violations.
Regards,
Tim.
