I then discovered, surprise surprise, that my built in drive was already a DVD burner. My CD only burner was not that at all. When I challenged my local Apple guru he was as puzzled as I.

Thanks too to Steve Bell off list for offering to assist. Thanks also go to Jack for the reminder of where to look...I had but had not delved quite deep enough. Thanks to Keith, and Kevin as well. Decided on the strength of my new found knowledge to swap the older DVD drive for the new one which is faster, having of course remembered to alter the settings and we should be back on track soon. BTW I find the power connectors on Macs are very hard to remove not that I am complaining...good to have a solid connection. This is something that could do with being improved on PC's.
BTW the double posting is not something going wrong here as far as I know...after the above I am not so confident <BG>
