Note that the Extract plugin and background eraser (and Ultimatte) do color decontamination on the edge (that's why they can't just create a mask or alpha channel as their result -- they also change the color of the foreground pixels). By contrast the pen tools, magic wand, magnetic lasso, and hand-painted masks will do nothing about "blue spill" or other foreground color contamination.
