Apple's 17 LCD is pretty nice,
I'm looking at one now, connected to my Powerbook.

I have a retoucher client who does his work mostly on Apple 17's.

do take the extended Applecare warranty though, they can sometimes
develop faults after the 12 month warranty.

eyeOne [Display] is a pretty good device, but has somewhat basic
bundled software, I suggest you might like to look at the basICColor
Squid [internally the same device] with basICColor Display software.
(yes. I need to own up here that I do import it - that's because I like
it and since one off imports from Germany are painful and expensive my
clients complained). Or you have the option to buy eyeone and upgrade
to basICColor Display SW later.
