However, I feel that I now need to offer some kind of explanation/justification of the 'digital' thing to support my work, the prices I charge (around 60 per A3print, mounted, unframed), and professional photography in general. I had thought of approaching Jack Lowe direct but decided to test the water with you first. Any comments would be much appreciated please.
Hi Caroline I was interested in your comment since I run an art gallery in the Lake District, and haven't found much interest from customers in print longevity or digital aspects of limited edition printing. If they are going to buy something, they just buy it. That goes both for photographic work and paintings. However, some customers are aware of 'giclee' and regard it as a statement of quality. None of us at the gallery actually use the term. Perhaps we should! Your prices by the way seem to be about the going rate. I would advise not pushing technical information unless they ask, but be ready with some printed information from Wilhelm's website (http://www.wilhelm-research.com/) showing different manufacturer's specs for longevity testing. E.g. some ask for a 50% humidity test, another for a 20% - 90% variation. Epson raise an interesting point there about potential change in colour of the receiver coating. I have a load of references if you want them. I'm sure any approach to Jack Lowe would prove fruitful. Thinking of doing it myself. I am however concerned about misleading longevity claims, and the lack of any trades description. I publish a website statement stating the claims I make about my own work (http://www.photosightdesign.co.uk/archival.htm).
