I am relatively new to digital photography (as opposed to working with
scanning and files), and have a query concerning downloading RAW files from
camera (1Ds) to PC and renaming them as I do so. Can anyone offer any
suggestions please?

All my files have been in the past named using a set format that I would
like to retain but am having problems using my current programs (Photoshop
CS and Canon's supplied software). This begins with two letters, then a
sequential 4 digit number followed by a space and word description (normally
a single word - the location or subject). An example would be 'AE0123
London'.

Ideally, I would like to download from camera to computer and have the
software incrementally add the number. Thus, I set the start letters and
word (by selecting all the London pics and transferring them, then all the
Guildford pics or whatever, and so on) and give a start number for the four
digits, which the software adds one to every time it transfers the file. I'm
not looking to batch process the RAW files - I want RAW at the other end of
the transfer, but with a different name.

The software I have looked at will add an incremental number, but only at
the end of the file. Is there anything out there which will add a number in
the centre of the file name? Or has anyone any idea how to go about this? At
the moment, I transfer the files with the subject at the start and the
number at the end, then individually move the word from start to end - an
utter waste of time.

Any help or ideas appreciated!
