Hello,

After not being used for about 8 days, I found my 1160 and
CIS/Fotonics to be completely blocked in the yellow. There was not a
single spot of yellow in the nozzle check. I came across a solution I
have not seen written anywhere. All the usual procedures followed:
nozzle cleans, purge prints, Windolene-soaked cloths left overnight under
the head, a go with the cleaning carts and then the same all over again.
Still blocked.
With a call to John Read at Marrutt, he suggested a check for an air
blockage. With the small clips that came with the continuous ink system,
clip all the pipes near the bottles; remove the cartridges, turn them
upside down and place them on a cloth; remove the yellow clip and blow
into the short breathing pipe; ink will ooze out of the outlet, clearing
out any air blockage; put the clip back on; install the cartridges and
remove all the clips.
Another nozzle check and still blocked. A head transplant seemed
likely. Off came the cartridges again. I looked at the spigots through
a magnifying and saw that the little holes in the top were blocked with
ink. The head seemed dead in the water anyway so I got a fine needle and
poked it into each of the holes. A new Windolene-soaked cloth was placed
under the head. I got a syringe and enlarge the plastic nozzle slightly
with a small drill so that it would go over the yellow spigot. I filled
the syring with Windolene, placed it over the spigot, squeezed out some
solution and left the syringe positioned on the spigot to give it a good
soak. It's best to lock the children and pets in the cellar for a couple
of days while this goes on.
In the evening, I gave the syringe another squeeze and left it in
position overnight. Next day I did the same with very hot water and left
it all day. In the evening, with the cartridges back a head clean and
nozzle check produced a few yellow lines. After being left overnight
again, another clean and check and it was working perfectly. Phew.
I now have a timer on the printer so even if it is not used, it will
switch on automatically for an hour every day and it usually does a mini
head clean at the same time.

John at Marrutt is of the opinion that it is unnecessary to use
cleaning carts on a new printer if Epson inks have not been installed at
all. Of course you are taking a bit of a chance that the printer is
working perfectly, but they normally do anyway. The thing to do is
install the Fotonics and use the printer a lot immediately to really gets
the inks throught the system. They have set up hundreds of printers this
way and never had a problem, and it saves some 40 on the cleaning carts.
Marrutt at 01825 764057 are more than happy to help anyone with
printer problems and queries even if they are not using their inks and
products.

Yours,

Duncan Wherrett
