16 bpc files allow more options for tone changes than 8 bpc. Nobody will
see a difference between the two on screen or print but if you later made
some large adjustments then you'd maybe see a difference. When I did some
tests I could only see the difference with abnormally heavy curve adjustments.

You could save the 16 bpc files as jpeg 2000 lossless & they'd take up no
more space than your 8 bpc tiffs do now.
