Hi Mike,
The problem is probably with the Microdrive which is much slower than a CF card. CF cards themselves come in different 'speeds' (52 x is currently the fastest I believe) and this really does make a difference both capturing images and downloading them.
The bus speed on an internal PCMCIA slot is generally as fast or faster than Firewire 400, I am told.
Experiment with a fast CF card and things may improve.
I use 48 x Lexar cards but it is still a drag waiting for all that data to slop onboard.
(You could always shoot less pictures !)
