Thanks from my researches:
ibooks are indeed VGA out, you can get a cheap VGA to DVI adaptor and a relatively cheap adaptor (made by Formac) DVI-D to Apples ADC. Only slight problem is that DVI-D will not talk to DVI !
So yes one needs something like the Dr Bott adaptor which costs about 300 dollars.
The second problem is that the monitor must be able to run the native resolution of the graphic card, in this case 1024 x768 when using adaptors.
the third problem is, if you run a TFT screen at its non-native resolution you get a furry mess of an image, the sharpness is poor to awful.
Basically if one could get hold of a 15 inch VGA equipped TFT monitor with a native resolution of 1024 x 768
it should work fine AFAIK. However the specs on these appear poor (contrast etc) when compared to a 19 inch. They appear to be designed for offices rather than imagers.
looked at the Dr. Bott adaptor and Apple LCD 17?
1280x1024 :-(
I guess the most sensible thing is to get a laptop with a decent video card in it with DVI/ADC out. trouble with that route is that it would probably have a fairly decent monitor built in and I wouldn't need an external one :-)
Thanks to everyone for their input on and off list
