[PRODIG] CCD or CMOS

I was leafing through a trade journal called Panorama at my local lab 
yesterday and in an article called Digital vs Film, Ron Stillwell 
states.
"a CCD chip gives better results than a CMOS (higher signal, better 
signal to noise ratio)"
Is this true?
