John

AFAIK, that shouldn't be necessary. The files are usually put into different
folders. It's been a while since I installed and can't remember whether it
is possible to put the files for the upgrade into the older version's
folders. IAC, I never do that with upgrades, unless instructed by the
installer, so haven't clocked whether it is possible with a Photoshop
install.

The upgrades aren't really upgrades in the true sense of the word, they are
full installations. They just require you to have the full version or the
previous version on the disk or its CD/Serial number to hand.

The prefs files also have different names, so that the two versions can
reside on the same disk.

It might be an idea to keep the old version for a while - unless, of course,
you have somehow managed to mix the files. In which case, remove all traces
of Photoshop, restart and do a clean install.
