He might actually post a PDF document converted to the printer's CMYK space (even if the conversion is proprietary so he doesn't have access to an ICC profile). This you will be able to soft proof on your screen using Acrobat Reader, and he'll send you a proof to substantiate it or check your setup. I don't know if you guys are aware that many huge publications and free sheets/periodicals are proofread and soft proofed this way via advanced systems. In certain cases a hardproof is not even produced - the pressman uses a calibrated monitor and a viewer as the reference. Basiccolor has built something called remote director that is SWOP certified. Don't be all pessimistic, there are people out there that do actually make these things work. Think positive (:-D) Just bear in mind that none of this will/would solve the problems you saw last time if it was sloppy press work.
