I've got a theory...

Am I right in thinking that your original images were captured to some kind
of media card and then transferred to the Mac?

These are usually MS-DOS file systems - and they don't understand the Mac's
concept of a "File Creation Date".

Insert one into your Mac, click on it once and do "Get Info". Does the
volume have a "Creation Date"? - I'm willing to bet that it doesn't, and
neither will any of the folders or files on the volume.

Importing the images using iPhoto or Mac software from the camera
manufacturer will cause the saved file to be assigned a creation date that
is identical to the modification date.

If you copy the files using the Finder this won't happen and your images
will have no creation date - or the Mac default of "1 Jan 1904".

If this is bugging you then ISTR writing a script that will assign a
Creation Date that matches the modification date using AppleScript. The only
problem with using it is that it requires access to a unix app that you'll
only have if you've installed the Developer Tools or Xcode Tools.

Regards
