Following Martin's advice I reverted to using Image Capture (I'd lost control of it - it was fighting i-vue, importing stuff twice willy-nilly, and I kept losing it!).
I checked the creation dates on the card and as usual they were 1 January 1904.
After Image Capture had handled the transfer the files had "almost" sensible creation dates about an hour in the future.
Thinking it through I realised I hadn't reset the camera since the clocks went back. So when Image Capture added the creation dates it must have chosen the ones that claim not to exist on the CF card.
So problem solved - thanks to Apple I can live with not understanding how it works.
