Depending on the file content and if the conversion is made properly, which
can be very difficult from a large space such as ProPhoto to a
proportionally very small CMYK destination, for example.

If assigned ARGB rather than converted but this is colour *management*.  One
could go on forever down this route as the same applies for so many
different mistaken combinations and situations.  Try assigning sRGB to a
ProPhoto file for example...
