Don't trash anything. He saved on Big Data: was it connected? You say the files are visible in Capture One? Just the thumbnails? Can you edit any files? If you can, they exist on your boot volume but Find and the Finder can't see them because they're in a private System directory in which Capture One has built its usual file structure. Reboot your Mac in Target Disk Mode, attach it to another Mac, then search. Finder can't look in private directories on the boot volume, but can look there on disks mounted in Target Disk Mode. If for some reason the alias to Big Data in your Volumes folder has been replaced by a folder and your files are there, this procedure will reveal them and you can move them to somewhere sensible. Mine's a pint at the AGM :-) Put simplistically, the Volumes folder is where OSX records all volumes which have been mounted by the system.
