Has anyone out there managed to successfully recover accidentally trashed files in OSX?
Hi Julia. I once 'wiped' an entire 120gb drive. All you are really doing is giving the computer permission to overwrite so if you haven't done anything since there is a good chance you can recover something. I recovered my drive using Nortons file recovery. It took 24 hours and found 3500 files. The vast majority were fine. Some were trashed. You have to tell it the kind of files to look for: such as .nef in my case. I specified jpegs aswell and it separated the jpeg previews from the raw files. The .nefs came back as tifs which is what raw files are a type of. They wouldn't open in Adobes camera raw until I had changed the file extension to .nef. You have to be a bit lateral with it because I wasn't allowed to change the extensions in the file browser in Photoshop but I could in the folder itself. Basically if you get as far as recovered files don't bin them again until you've tried everything you can think of to open it. You'll get lots of end of file errors and stuff like that and they are stuffed but a lot should be fine. Too much detail I'm sure but hopefully its reduced that dry mouth with big lump in throat feeling you might have. I know a lot of people hate Nortons but it saved my neck.
HTH. Patrick.
