I'm trying to determine what the best storage/preservation media for digital images?
I have read the literature on cd vs dvd vs magnetic tape... but I'm wondering what everyone is REALLY using.

Hi Jessica,
I've found the only way to keep up with all this data is firstly to mirror my mac laptop to an external drive, then after each days shoot, to put all the raw files onto a Lacie 500 gb HD (or my ipod on location) and back those up to DVD-R.
My system is simple and I have all the digital images I've shot over the last 5 years (unlike most of the E6 I shot before that which is gone!) I'd also be lost without iview media pro to manage and keep track of everything.
The new DNG format looks like a good idea too; I used to use Genuine fractals. Today a client asked for some of those files as jpegs or tiffs as they couldn't use them and I've had a tough time going back through old software to dig them out again - and that's from only two years ago!
What ever you choose to do, it can and will at some point go wrong. Think things through for yourself and check those dodgy plugs under your desk that feel warm before they burn your house / archive down!

PS.
I know I'm a slow typist but since I started this reply there have been two (now three) reports of failed back up systems. Sleep well all.

Cheers
