Earlier this year I came across various archive systems based on automatic
DVD burning "jukeboxes". As I understood it they generally involve a
dedicated pc on the network. Any data to be archived is simply copied to
this pc and it automatically divides it into DVD sized chunks and burns the
disk - all you have to do is load stacks of blanks in the top and pull the
burned ones out the bottom. Some of them even have a printer built in to
label the disks.

The clever bit is that a file copied to this archive location stays there
even after it has been burned and deleted from the hard drive so to find an
old file you just search the archive, double click the file and you get a
message saying which DVD it is on.

I did not pursue this solution on grounds of cost, but I would be interested
to hear from anyone who has used something like this.

Regards,

William Chitham.
