Great news but.... Major caution to Kodak DSLR users. I just downloaded the new version. Edited added Keywords to 14nx DCR files and synced annotations as normal. Now Kodak's PhotoDesk will no longer recognize and open the files. This worked fine with the previous version. Fortunately I have adequate backups. I'm out the door in a rush to a shoot and don't have time to investigate further right now but thought I'd pass along this word of caution
Bob:
I did some testing yesterday as well.
Don't want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, but testing is advised before you commit to a new workflow. Also, due to the fact that there may be some "hidden metadata" within any given RAW file, you should not discard the original RAW. Be sure it's backed up as an option should your camera manufacturer come up with their own DNG converter (that does capture and store the "special sauce" that Adobe didn't find when reverse engineering the file format).
I just downloaded and tested out iView Media Pro 2.6.2 on a Mac running OSX 10.3 and Photoshop CS (and Adobe DNG converter) with Nikon NEF files.
If I convert a NEF file to DNG, and then catalog that in iView, I can annotate all the fields (with the exception of the toggleable "copyright status" field). Keywords are still a problem as they must be entered one by one, but there may be a scriptable option coming down the road if I get my wish.
;-)
I had no problem "sync-ing" annotations and pushing that out to the DNG file.
When I open in Photoshop CS, I can see the metadata in the file browser window. When I process the image through ACR 2.3 I can view the metadata in the "File Info" section for the file after it's done.
Going this route works well (except for keywords).
Trying to reverse the route doesn't appear to be working, which leaves us with a "one-way" solution.
Specifically, if I take the converted DNG file and use the batch metadata "injection" method in the file browser, the information (including keywords) is embedded in the IPTC/XMP metadata in the DNG file (not a sidecar). I can see it appear in the metadata panel of the file browser after the embedding so I know it's there.
If I then process this file through Adobe ACR 2.3, the metadata is still there when I open the File Info panel, and then save it as a TIF.
However, if I take the DNG with embedded metadata (done using the file browser) and instead catalog it with iView Media Pro 2.6.2, I only get the keywords from the metadata I embedded using the PSCS file browser. ???
Can anyone else test this with some other file format (like one of the Canon or Fuji files) and see if you get the same results?
TIA,
David
