Transfering to a DV camera is a good idea. Very easy to capture from a PC or Mac. XP has Windows Movie Maker.

If you want something to capture this, all my friends that work in the video industry use this external Canopus:

No idea on pricing.

From there on you should get some software that can convert the DV video into a ready-to-burn DVD format (mpeg2).

There's laods of software for XP. I've tested apps but they're all too simple for my taste.

If the source is VHS I wouldn't waste my time with any high end setup. If you have a DVD burner, I'm sure you have some software that came with it to create DVDs out of DV file.

It can take some time to convert DV to mpeg. Even if your computer is quick, some of this programs are not very efficient so they'll take time anyway.

Make a search in google for "dv to dvd" or "dv 2 dvd" and check if there's any software you can try-out without restrictions.

You can also convert DV to mpeg2 with VirtualDub or Xmpeg (both free and better than the other "easy to use" software out there). This are more complicated and then you still need to convert the mpeg2 video and whatever audio format you use to .vob DVD files to be able to burn this.

Software like U-Lead can capture the DV format straight away from the Capture Card or DV camera and burn the DVD straight from there (takes some time to convert and recompress).

They even have a free trial (not sure what restrictions you have). Be advise it's for home users so don't expect professional settings.

Email me if you need any more help with this. I don't want to write a long and boring email with the whole process of encoding DV to Mpeg2.

If you had a Mac with a DVD burner you should have iDVD which wont cost you anything (not taking sides or anything, I have both. Just an inexpensive suggestion if you have one at hand).

Cheers,

Lucas.
