Many thanks to everyone who replied so promptly, both on and off list. It's
made me realise that it's a fascinating subject in itself!

Lots of good reading there

Feed the output from VHS tape player into a miniDV Camcorder, and
output from that into the computer.
The VHS is analogue and you have to convert it to digital for the
computer & subsequently DVD.
Find a friend with a digital camcorder - one that has a digital out
that your PC can take (firewire?).
Another easy way is to feed the output from a VHS machine into a DVD
recorder (one for TVs) but check compatibility of DVD type for
playback, and don't omit finalising disk.
Otherwise yes there are special cards & boxes - but these are
straightforward.>

Ed Horwich and Alan Reaburn both suggested a quality solution which is to
but a converter box from Formac, Miglia etc and software to match and Lucas
suggested another called Canopus.

Seems the way to go for best quality is a specialist converter box, or find
a pal with a DVI camera for a more budget solution as long as it's got a
video in connector.

Of course, the one thing everyone mentioned is that VHS was no great shakes
in quality anyway, so the old saying 'crap in, crap out' is relevant.

Many thanks to all who took the trouble to respond, might have been a little
OT, but it's surprising how many of us either have experience of it or were
wondering 'how to'
