Neil: I attended the information session on DNG at the PhotoPlus Expo about a month ago, and recall something Kevin Conners of Adobe mentioned about the preview images being generated in the adobe software being of a limited size. This may be the issue you are running into. I can't recall the details of that issue, but did you try using the "rebuild item" command in iView to see if that makes a difference? I know when I first opened the DNG file in the Photoshop File browser that the image looked a bit flat and washed out and then it updated automatically and looked much better. What I'd really be interested to know is whether or not metadata embedded in the DNG made from the RAF files made it into iView. I'd just tested this last week with Nikon NEF files and found a few issues, namely that the only thing making it into iView was the info in the keyword field. Regarding metadata and DNG files, Kevin Conners did provide a warning at that session at PhotoPlus Expo. He strongly suggested NOT throwing away your current RAW files. The reason is that some of the proprietary/private metadata may be lost in the translation. Adobes current DNG convertor can't retain any proprietary/private metadata that is not known to exist in the file. If the manufacturer creates their own DNG convertor, or partially processes the file to hide this metadata, then access to the original would be needed in order to access that original data. At that same session, Phase one announced their intention to support DNG at that session, though was waffling on whether or not they'd support metadata. Guess the field is still pretty wide open in regards to archiving RAW, eh?
