I think that it's important to get the 'dust thing' with a digital camera
into proportion.
Sometimes it's a problem, occasionally it's a nuisance but mostly it is
fine - just another
small hassle to deal with on a job. I've been shooting with a Canon 1ds for
two years,
often in dirty, dusty, humid and sometimes hostile environments. Yes, my
advice would
be to fit a zoom lens in such conditions and keep it in place if possible.
However, if
a great picture presented itself which needed a different lens, I'd always
go for it and
worry about dust on the sensor once I'd got the shot in the bag!

Choice of lens should be dictated by the type of work you do. Forget the
dust thing,
just choose what fits your vision and workload best. Me? I wouldn't be
without
my 14mm lens, the one I always reach for when I'm struggling to make an
interesting
picture on a dull assignment. Usually does the trick!
