They were never really taken away as few had them in the first place.

criminals are now empowered to strike with no fear of facing any
effective defense. You must love that.
Gun crime is much lower in the the UK than the US. The only guns I
have ever seen were either being carried by soldiers or (rarely)
being carried by armed police. The vast majority of UK police are
unarmed.

The pictures of bulldozers crushing guns were in the news over here at
the time, lots and lots of guns. Sporting guns and heirlooms being
crushed, not the "assault weapons" the left likes to rail on and on about.
I didn't say "gun crime", I said crime. Crime is up in the UK and
Australia, or at least it is reported to be.
