How's soccer awareness in the USA these days?
Well, I can't speak for the entire country. ;-) But it certainly is changing. When I grew up, I never played soccer: it was baseball in the spring and summer, football in the fall and basketball in the winter. When I went to high school (early 70s), the NASL was formed, and we had aging stars like Pelé, Chinaglia, Beckenbauer and Best playing, and it was kinda cool to watch this "new" game and what these guys could do.
My kids have grown up in a world with soccer in the forefront of sports. The stars of the soccer teams are the big studs in the local High School, while the football players are second-rate. This is not the case in most of the country, though, where American Football (what we soccer fans refer to as 'pointyball' ;-) still is King.
People know that the World Cup is going on, but there are just as many TV and sports reporters making fun of it as there are treating it seriously. But I think that with the current generation of kids growing up playing soccer and watching the rest of the world play it well, by the time they have kids soccer will be much more prominent in the culture. But for now, there are places like Rochester where soccer has progressed a lot, and many more places that are still waiting to discover the game.
BTW, what happened to Brazil? Who were those guys they sent onto the pitch against France? They looked like the Brazil team, but they sure didn't play like them!
