I think languages are too important to leave to a single vendor. RealBasic sounds good, but it's not Open. The vendor could change the licensing with the next version, drop support for platforms that aren't commercially viable, or introduce a killer bug (shades of dBASE IV!). If I get a great opportunity to drop an app on an ARM9 milliwatt board, I can cross compile a Python, Perl, PHP, Ruby, C++, Lisp, or Scheme app. I've already had vendors radically change my career with a proprietary language they dropped. Why would I do that again?
