I don't think anyone thought that Zidane snapped for no reason. The point is that he snapped. Materazzi knew that he could get in Zidane's head, and he did. But nothing he could have said, no matter how bad, excuses the attack. Sticks and stones...

Zidane has a slew of red cards, moreso than most players who have been around for a while. What's interesting is that most players get them for a second caution in a match, whereas 11 of Zidane's 14 reds have been direct send-offs. IOW, he's got a temper, and a long history of losing that temper.
