1.  You can't share the connection without networking,
unless you plug one in and unplug the other computer. 
Networking today is a piece of cake, so do it along
with this project.

2.  you need a dsl modem.  One is probably provided by
your ISP.

3.  You need a router.  One is might be provided by
your ISP.  You can mix hardwire and wireless with a
wireless router, so I would choose the wireless.  Most
wireless routers have 4 or so ports for hard-wire too.

4.  The NAT nature of the router would provide some
firewall protection, a software firewall on each
computer should be fine.  You can also buy a router
with a built-in firewall, or you can buy a separate
firewall.

I like dLink, which is inexpensive.
